Description:

Western Asia, Iran, Seljuq period, Kashan, ca. 12th to early 13th century CE. A stunning pair of lusterware bowls known as Kashan ware, each formed from stonepaste with a ring-form foot and flared walls intricately adorned in abstract, underglaze designs. The first boasts metallic gold colored glaze of calligraphic bands of foliated Kufic and Naskh scripts, as well as scrolling floral and vegetal motifs. Alternatively, the second bowl is embellished with white and cobalt glaze and pierced with a band of triangles and circles that are filled with translucent glaze allowing light to pass through. Shimmering violet and rainbow iridescence envelops the dish, further highlighting its elegant form! Size (both about the same): 6.7" Diameter x 3" H (17 cm x 7.6 cm)

Luster Ware was produced in Kashan, a major pottery production center from the 11th through the 17th century. This technique required the application of pigments over a glaze after the first firing. Potters then fired the pieces at lower temperatures a second time. The pigments used were silver and copper mixed with an earthy medium, resulting in an earthy color and a mother of pearl effect. This tradition continued into the 14th century.
