Lot 100A
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit and Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE - 300 CE. A charming pair of polychrome pottery seated male figures, one significantly larger than the other, the larger from Jalisco, the smaller Nayarit, both holding a drinking or snuff tube that is submerged in a round gourd bowl. The sculptor depicted each figure leaning slightly forward so as to capture these individuals in the act of indulging in their beverages or perhaps hallucinogenic drugs. In addition to the rich red-brown slip painted upon the surfaces of each figure, some finely painted black and white details remain; the black mask-like face paint on the smaller figure and the elegant swirls on the larger figure's gourd bowl are particularly impressive. A wonderful pair from this ancient West Mexican shaft tomb culture. Size: Largest measures 7" W x 11.5" H (17.8 cm x 29.2 cm), Smaller measures 3" W x 4.5" H (7.6 cm x 11.4 cm).
Provenance: Ex-private T. Meisemhimer Collection, Hollywood, CA, ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, NYC, NY.
