Description:

For every order (single or multiple lots) in this auction, Artemis Gallery will donate 25 meals to Community Food Share, a Feeding America Food Bank.

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A striking pair of matched 71% gold (equivalent to 15K+) earrings, each composed of a curved sheet of gold attached to a thin gold wire wrapped with a wider sheet of gold and with an applied gold spiral at its base. Dangling below are a quartet of hollow gold spheres decorated with tiny granulations. These earrings would have belonged to an elite Roman woman. Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society, because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit. Stunning and potentially wearable (see condition report). Size of one: 0.45" W x 1.5" H (1.1 cm x 3.8 cm); 71% gold (equivalent to 15K+); total weight of both: 3.6 g

Provenance: private Los Angeles, California, USA collection, purchased prior to 2006; ex-private Smith collection, San Diego, California, USA

  • Condition: Slight bending to form, with some small losses to the gold sheet. One of them has been repaired where the wire meets the body. Could be made wearable with modern findings.
