Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A pair of beautiful high quality gold earrings (95% gold, equivalent to 22K+) - each one presenting an elegant crescent-moon-shape comprised of hollow gold sheet with a curved wire for attachment. The crescent moon shape was associated with Luna, the divine embodiment of the moon usually depicted in Roman art paired with the Sun and driving a four-horse chariot known as a quadriga. Lunar motifs are also linked with the Roman goddesses Diana and Juno. Size: .625" L x .625" W (1.6 cm x 1.6 cm); Weight: 2.3 grams. Gold quality: 95% gold, equivalent to 22K+.

Roman women - especially of the upper classes - had their ears pierced and wore one set of earrings. Jewelry was particularly important to women in Roman society because it was legally their own property, independent of their husband's wealth, and they could use it as they saw fit.
