Description:

Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A wonderful pair of intaglio cabochons caved from carnelian. Displaying a translucent hue of crimson, the first intaglio is intricately sculpted with a striding bird facing left. Alternatively, the second example boasts the image of a Capricorn facing left, surrounded by 3 left-facing, anthropomorphic heads, all carved into an opaque, scarlet-colored stone. Size (of largest intaglio): 0.4" L x 0.25" W (1 cm x 0.6 cm); Size (of case, both the same): 1.25" W x 0.625" H (3.2 cm x 1.6 cm)

Provenance: private Corpus Christi, Texas, USA estate collection, acquired 1960s to 1970s
