Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. Two cast bronzes created during the reign of the Romans. The first piece depicts a griffin (gryphon) seated in profile with its magnificent plumed wings and powerful haunches clearly defined. The griffin, half eagle and half lion, was a fierce symbol of divine power. Joining this example is a brooch that depicts a classical arched colonnade made famous by the Romans. Size: 1.5" H (3.8 cm)

  • Condition: Both show expected surface wear and abraded areas. Griffin shows slight bending and is missing its attachment device and pin. The arcuated colonnade is missing its pin. Both show wonderful patina.
