Rome, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A wonderful pair of bronze appliques, both cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique, the first a handle with a human head at the base end - the abstract visage comprised of almond-shaped eyes, elegant arched brows, a straight nose, petite mouth, prominent chin, all framed by long striated coiffure with a headband across the fringe of bangs - the handle portion with a wavy periphery rising above. Joining this piece is a roundel boss presenting a cherubic, fleshy face in relief framed by hanging curls on each side, with a cap that culminates in a triangular peak above. Custom stand. Size: handle piece measures 1.25" W x 3.375" H (3.2 cm x 8.6 cm); roundel measures 1.375" in diameter (3.5 cm); 2.75" W x 4.125" H (7 cm x 10.5 cm) on stand
