Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Neolithic period, ca. 4500 to 500 BCE. A pair of stone blades known as gouges, each pecked and polished - one with a rounded upper face and the other with a prominent spine. Both have a concave cutting edge which probably assisted with carpentry tasks such as cutting and shaping wood. Each gouge has ancient chips and nicks from over the ages and use, but the original surfaces are highly polished and retouched in modern times. Size: 6.25" L x 2.5" W (15.9 cm x 6.4 cm)
