Description:

Native American, Eastern to Midwestern United States, Eastern Woodland, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. A fine pair of hand-knapped stone celts that likely served as hand tools for digging and grinding, both boasting smooth, naturally speckled surfaces with hues of ash gray, taupe, charcoal, caramel, and chocolate brown. The larger stone presents a rectangular form with one side slightly thicker and more rounded, while the other side has a tapered edge. Alternatively, the more petite implement exhibits a more traditional axe-like form with a curved blade at one end and a hefty, narrow butt at the other. Size of larger: 4.7" L x 2.1" W (11.9 cm x 5.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-old private New England collection, acquired in the 1970s; ex-Terry Elleman collection, 1960s to 1980s
