Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. Two beautiful necklaces comprised of many Spondylus shell beads of square, round, and rectangular shapes, some with stunning purple hues and natural striated patterns. Spondylus shells, also known as spiny or thorny oysters, have been revered by Andean peoples since the Pre-Columbian era. In addition to being featured in their artwork and used as currency, Spondylus pieces served as sacred offerings to Pachamama, the earth/time mother, a version of Mother Nature. Size: 24" L (61 cm) and 23" L (58.4 cm)
