Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE (tripod), and Post Classic Maya, Mixtec, present day Mexico, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE (highly decorated bowl). Nicely complementary ceramic vessels from southern Mexico. The first is a tripod bowl standing on rounded feet, painted a pale, creamy color with red bands around the top of each leg and the rim. The second is a steep-walled bowl with a complex abstract design in red and orange on a pale brown burnished background. Size of the larger: 4.95" W x 2.7" H (12.6 cm x 6.9 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Harvey Collection, acquired prior to 1972

  • Condition: Tripod vessel (Jalisco) is intact, with manganese deposits on half of the body. The other (Mixtec) has two pressure cracks, unrepaired but stable, opposite each other, starting at the rim to about halfway down the body.
