Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Post Classic, Mixtec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A pair of complementary pottery vessels. Size of jug: 6.8" L x 3.75" W x 6.05" H (17.3 cm x 9.5 cm x 15.4 cm); size of platter: 7.25" W x 3.5" H (18.4 cm x 8.9 cm)

The first of these two vessels is a jug with a charming form, standing on two straight legs and one looped leg, with a flattened body and two cute loop handles on the shoulders. The neck narrows from the shoulder and then flares out into a broad rim. The body is burnished and earthy red, with overpainted white designs of lines, waves, and dots. On one side is a fine-line painted zoomorphic body - a lizard? A tortoise? - who stands within a burning sun.

The second is a platter with a tall, hollow base that has cut-out forms shaped like step pyramids, perhaps left open so that the platter could be placed over a brazier. The wide bowl is burnished red, with a small, unpainted, buff area in the center.
