Pre-Columbian, Maya territories, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A beautiful pair of matching greenstone ear spools, both presenting a traditional flared form, with a flat round face and a cylindrical, hollow plug. Ear spools like these were cherished as heirlooms; the Maya associated their style and form with the earlier Olmecs, and passed them down for generations. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 1.5" W x 0.8" H (3.8 cm x 2 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 1990s

  • Condition: Both earspools are repaired from two large pieces, with nearly invisible resurfacing and very light adhesive residue along break lines. Both have nicks to rims and bodies as well as light encrustations. Great color throughout.
