Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two Jalisco pottery figures, both seated with legs folded and holding one hand over the abdominal region, one holding a cup in the other, one holding her other hand to her cheek, both with characteristically tall decorated headdresses, large ear ornaments, and boldly delineated features including pointy noses and ears - characteristic traits of so-called "sheepface" figures - all adorned in red slip with extensive white details. A lovely pair. Size: taller figure measures 8.5" H (21.6 cm)

Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

  • Condition: Head of the figure with a hand to her cheek was reattached. Both with expected surface wear showing minor losses and surface fissures to finish commensurate with age. Both with nice areas of manganese deposits.
