Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A pair of ceramic female figures from the West Mexican shaft tomb tradition, each presenting a characteristic Jalisco "sheepface" with a projecting nose and pointed ears and adorned in an earthy red slip with white-painted decorations and details. Both standing with arms held outwards their flat bodies display ample breasts and short limbs. Banded headdresses wrap around their elongated brows, while their bodies are further embellished by short skirts, necklaces, anklets, and earspools. Size of largest: 5.8" W x 10.3" H (14.7 cm x 26.2 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery, Louisville, Colorado, USA, February 26th, 2018, lot 61; ex-private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery

  • Condition: White-headed figure has repairs to top of head, ears, and nose with some break lines visible, some light restoration, and repainting to areas. Red-headed figure has repairs to proper left arm and both legs with break lines visible, as well as restoration to right arm and hand and repair to top of head with light restoration and repainting. Both have expected surface wear with some abrasions. Otherwise, both are very nice with impressive pigments and great mineral and earthen deposits.
