Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Two hand-built terracotta seated figures, one male and the other female, and both covered in a deep-red slip. The male sits with one knee raised with arms resting atop and has a curved back, rounded shoulders, and a thick neck. His visage displays an enormous nose, a rounded chin and cheeks, pointed ears, and a tall forehead with a thin headband traversing down the back of his head. The female figure has one leg folded beneath the other, sinuous arms, globular breasts, and a thick neck; her face exhibits similar features as the male figure. Each figure displays white-painted embellishments such as necklaces and shoulder adornments, and both are wonderful examples of ancient shaft-tomb pottery! Size of largest (male): 6.875" H (17.5 cm).
Provenance: private Stagecoach, Nevada, USA collection; acquired from 1985 to present from galleries such as Arte Primitivo, Art For Eternity, Butterfields, and Riverbend Gallery
