Native American, Northwestern United States, Alaska, Inuit, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A pair of handmade low rise mukluk shoes comprised of sealskin, caribou fur, and wool - possibly muskox - with a beaded star. The skin of the bearded seal is very tough making the perfect sole exterior, and the characteristic crimping along toe tip is made by chewing the edges! The word mukluk comes from the Yupik word "maklak" for bearded seal. Size of each: 10.5" L x 3.75" W (26.7 cm x 9.5 cm)
