(1) Dawn Navasie (Hopi Pueblo, b. 1961). Polychrome olla, n.d. Signed "Dawn" on base; (2) Anonymous (Hopi, 20th century). Polychrome olla, n.d. A beautiful pair of pottery ollas with piriform bodies and hand-painted in Sikyatki Revival style. One boasts a lustrous burnish and is signed by Hopi artist Dawn Navasie, while the other is anonymous. Size of taller (anonymous jar): 5" Diameter x 6.5" H (12.7 cm x 16.5 cm)

Dawn Navasie, "Polaquimana" (Red Tail Hawk), member of the Water Clan, was born into the Hopi-Tewa Reservation in 1961. She was inspired to continue the family tradition of pottery making from her extremely famous mother, the late Eunice "Fawn" Navasie. Fawn taught Dawn all the fundamentals of making traditional Hopi pottery at the age of 4. Dawn would assist her mother with her pottery and thus inspired her to learn. Dawn began perfecting her pottery making skills at the age of 17.

    Condition:
  • One is signed "Dawn" on base. Anonymous vessel has chipping to rim and some nicks to surface in areas, as well as slight wobble to base. Otherwise, both are intact and very nice with good remaining pigments. Old pencil markings from previous owner on underside of Dawn Navasie base.
