Description:

Near East/the Levant, Holy Land, Iron Age, ca. 8th to 5th century BCE. A pair of complementary buffware pottery vessels from the Holy Land, commonly called "juglets." The smaller is a bulbous, exaggeratedly-amphora-shaped vessel with an elegant curving handle on one side, a very thin neck, and a thick mouth. The larger has an apple-shaped body with a flattened base, a wide mouth, and a narrow strap handle from the unpronounced rim to the shoulder. Historically, Iron Age II is the time when Israel was becoming a unified state under kings David and Solomon; meanwhile, influences from Cyprus, other parts of the Levant, and the Phoenicians were all creating a cultural melting pot that greatly influenced pottery styles. Juglets like this would presumably have been used to hold perfumes or other precious liquids. Size of largest: 4.5" W x 5.65" H (11.4 cm x 14.4 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
