Description:

Graeco-Roman world, 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. These are two terracotta oil lamps with round nozzles and filagree decorations. One has four hearts in a central discus on top and what is probably a makers' mark stamp on the bottom. The second shows a cluster of grape leaves. Oil lamps would be filled with olive oil, have a wick placed inside of them, and used to light homes, shops, holy places, and many other places throughout the Greek and Roman world. Items like these remind us of the everyday lives of the people who would have used them. Size: 4.5" L x 3.25" W x .75" H (11.4 cm x 8.3 cm x 1.9 cm).

Provenance: ex-John Hibner, acquired in Turkey during military service in the 1960s.
