Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Teotihuacan, 1st to 5th c. CE. Two elegant blackware pottery vessels, including a magnificent florero, notable for its elegant, elongated neck and widely flared rim. This tripod vessel boasts nicely modeled vertical ribs on its walls perhaps intended to represent a phytomorphic form. Next is a sweet bowl with a flared rim and three petite feet, its surface incised with striations on the rim and a schematized shell form on the tondo. Size: florero is 5" in diameter x 5.125" H (12.7 cm x 13 cm)

The florero design may have originated elsewhere; however, the Teotihuacanos perfected it and created floreros from the first century CE until the city collapsed in 650 CE. The clean lines of this vessel are indicative of the refined abstract stylings of Teotihuacan. Impressive burnishing is evident on the surface of both pieces. This ceramic technique involved rubbing a hard stone along the unfired clay surface to align the tiny clay particles that form the "skin" of the piece. When these particles aligned, a lovely shiny surface resulted.
