Description:

Ancient Egypt, Old Kingdom, 3rd to 6th Dynasty, ca. 2686 to 2181 BCE. A lovely pair of alabaster vessels: a jar and a bowl. Larger of the 2, the jar features a narrow base and smooth walls that swell to an inward-curving rim. Alternatively, the bowl displays a round yet stable base and thick, straight walls above a shallow basin. Alabaster, which is a form of gypsum or calcite, soft to carve and smooth, was quarried along the length of the Nile, from Giza to just south of Luxor, and the Egyptians made its carved forms famous throughout the ancient world. A thousand years later, the Greeks made vessels like this out of pottery and painted them white in imitation of the beautiful stone. Size of larger (jar): 4.3" Diameter x 3.9" H (10.9 cm x 9.9 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private A.D. collection, London, UK since the 1990s
