Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. Two mold-made terracotta oil lamps with round, projecting spouts and ring handles, and flat, rounded bodies. The larger lamp displays a plain shoulder, evidence of red pigmentation, single incised ring base, and the motif of Fortuna holding a cornucopia surrounded by attendants in its central recessed discus. The smaller lamp shows an ovalo-variant shoulder design, a flat incised circular base, and raised rim encircling the central discus. A repeating motif of hounds chasing rabbits surround the inner recessed tondo with raised inner circle (presumably for the animals to run on). Small Lamp Size: 3.5” L x 2.75” W x 1.5” H (8.89 cm x 6.99 cm x 3.8 cm). Large Lamp Size: 4.75” L x 3.375” W x 1.625” H (12.07 cm x 8.57 cm x 4.1 cm).
