Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. A charming pair of hand-built terracotta warrior effigy whistles - both standing in composite profile behind protective shields - one also wielding a club as he peers over his shield with applied circular eyes looking out from a banded helmet - the other wearing a magnificent 'feathered' banded headdress. Amusingly, both warriors are otherwise nude, so the shields are providing necessary protection! The details are wonderful. Just look at those expressive countenances, and the articulated facial features and headdresses. In addition to being fun sculptural pieces, the whistles work well. Size: taller ocarina (with feathered headdress) measures 4.625" H (11.7 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Leonard Kaplan collection, California, USA
