Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Mayan Territories, Mayan, late Classic period, ca. 550 to 950 CE. A lovely group of hand-carved stone miniatures, one a pendant and the other a small seated figure. First is a finely-detailed head of a Mayan lord, with prominent facial features, a delineated neck line, and an elaborate headdress adorned in emerald-green pigment with a lateral perforation through the sides. Second is a squat figure which sits on a rounded base, its arms, torso, and neck all delineated, with an amusing countenance and domed head. Both items are wonderful examples from the later periods of the Mayan Empire! Size of largest (seated figure): 2.375" H (6 cm).

Provenance: private Lexington, Kentucky, USA collection; ex-Dr. Robert Gonzalo collection, acquired in the 1960s

  • Condition: Both items have age-commensurate surface wear, small chips around peripheries, fading to carved features and pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within recessed areas. Old sticker adhesive on base of figure.
