Description:

East Asia, China, Song Dynasty, ca. mid-10th to 12th century CE. An impressive pair of pottery jars, each presenting an apple-form body, a rounded shoulder, a narrow neck, and a flared rim, all sitting upon a discoid, applied foot. Both enveloped in a russet-hued glaze, the vessels also display petite vertical handles that surround their necks; 1 jar features 2 handles, while the other shows 4. Size (both about the same): 4.4" Diameter x 5.2" H (11.2 cm x 13.2 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Both have expected surface wear with chipping to rims, as well as nicks and abrasions throughout. Some peeling to glaze. Otherwise, both are intact and excellent with nice remaining pigment.
