Description:

North America, United States, ca. 1900 to 1930 CE. A pair of four-tower skyscraper cast iron still banks, the likely manufacturer, Williams AC who made this style building bank between 1900 and 1931, shown in The Penny Bank Book by Andy and Susan Moore on page 120 as number 1239, SKYSCRAPER. These examples celebrate the heyday of early modern skyscrapers designed by legendary architects Louis Sullivan and Burnham and Root, when Chicago and New York were competing to build the world's tallest building. New York City led the race in 1895 with the American Surety Building. By the 1920s and 1930s, the most renowned competition took place within Manhattan between the Chrysler Building (1930) and the Empire State Building (1931) which kept the lead for forty years until it was replaced by the World Trade Center (1972), which was overtaken by the Sears Tower a couple of years later, its title usurped by Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur (1998), and finally, the reigning world's tallest building today, the Burj Khalifa classified as Megatall took the title in 2008. Size: 5-1/2" x 2-7/8" (14 x 7.3 cm) and 4-1/2" x 2-1/4" (11.4 x 5.7 cm).
