Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. An impressive pair! Two tall rosewood corbels, ornately carved with openwork featuring mirrored motifs of scrolling foliate, bamboo, and grapevines with robed men perched within the twisting branches. The highest figure holds a tubular item, possibly a scroll, and the others hold fans and a bowl. The intricate decorative program took great skill to design and execute, clearly the work of a master artisan! These gorgeous corbels may have been an architectural element for a temple; however, wealthy members of society also displayed such pieces in their homes! Grapes traditionally have represented abundance and wealth in Chinese society, and the figures in these carvings may have represented ancestors. The size and details of these pieces are spectacular, and the wood has developed a nice age patina! Size: 11" L x 3" W x 55.5" H (27.9 cm x 7.6 cm x 141 cm); 57.5" H (146 cm) on included custom stand.
