Pacific Northwest Coast, British Columbia, Canada, Cowichan Coast Salish, Simon Charlie, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A pair of carved wooden rattles created and signed by Salish Master and Elder Simon Charlie (1920-2005) - also known as Hwunumetse - a 2003 recipient of the esteemed Order of Canada, the National Medal in 1967, and the Order of British Columbia in 2001. The larger rattle is painted in red and black with symbolic zoomorphic figures on both sides; the smaller with abstract geometric and feather motifs, also in black and red. Both are fitted with leather / hide suspension ties through perforations on the handles. Size: larger rattle measures 8.25" L x 2.5" W (21 cm x 6.4 cm)
Simon Charlie's career spanned more than 30 years. His impressive totem poles grace the galleries of the Royal B.C. Museum and the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa - and locales from Washington State to Chicago, New York, Holland, Australia, and New Zealand. His masks and artworks may be found in collections all over the globe. Charlie has been celebrated for his teachings about the culture, traditions, and heritage of his people. He was committed to preserving and maintaining their language, art, and various traditions.
