Description:

South America, ca. 19th century CE. Pair of brass stirrups with different designs on each. The first with a fleur-de-lis on the toe, and designs on each side reminiscent of feathers carved in the brass. The second also has a fleur-de-lis on the toe, but with horse head decorations on the sides. Both boots have triangular holes in the bottom, presumably to drain water from the stirrups. Brass stirrups were commonly used by Spanish colonists in the New World; there are even examples of single ones for women riding side saddle. They served an important function of protecting the foot whilst riding. Size: each approximately 11" x 5" x 4-3/4". Provenance: Ex-private Boulder, CO collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108318

  • Condition: Intact. Both shoes have a light patina, but the brass material and all decorations are clearly visible. There is some wear to the bottoms of both, probably indicating use, and very minor cracking to the triangular cutouts in the bottom. There is also a minor crack along the top edge of one of the stirrups.
