Description:

Near East, Persia, ca. 19th century CE. Two antique pendant ceramic tiles, each one featuring a hand-painted female bust (with slightly different hairstyles) set amidst an elaborate floral band. Interestingly, when the tiles are placed side by side, the ladies gaze intensely at one another. Both tiles are glazed in beautiful shades of cobalt blue, spring green, rosy pink, buttercup yellow, black and white and feature borders comprised of a black and white dotted pattern framed by a pink and green striated motif. Tiles were used to decorate the interiors and exteriors of many significant Persian edifices in the 19th century such as religious buildings, imperial palaces, and residences of dignitaries. Size: larger tile measures 4.875" L x 3.75" W (12.4 cm x 9.5 cm)
