Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Near East/Western Asia, Turkey or Egypt, Ottoman Empire, 19th century CE. These wooden stilted clogs are inlaid with triangular nacre shell and thin tin strips that create a stunning mosaic across the soles and sides. Leather straps with a cotton panel embroidered with silk threads are riveted to the front. These clogs are known as "qabqab" which is the Arabic word for the sound they make when striking the ground and they were worn in public baths by high status women- literally a shoe that elevated them physically and symbolically. These impressive pumps helped the lady avoid stepping on the wet and dirty floors of the bathhouse, but they were not particularly conventional, and an attendant was needed to assist the lady when she was walking. Size: 9" L x 4" W x 3" H (22.9 cm x 10.2 cm x 7.6 cm)
