Description:

India, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of intricately carved wooden horse heads modeled upon Marwari horses from Rajasthan in Northern India, each carved with bridles and braided manes above a horizontal bracket carved with stylized geometric motifs, most likely once attached to outer door posts in order to serve as a source of protection and courage for the occupants within. Wood block stand. Size: heads measure 7.5" L x 6.75" H (19 cm x 17.1 cm); 8" H (20.3 cm) on stand.

The Marwari is a rare horse breed known for its strength and unusual inward turning ear tips. The Rathores were rulers of the Marwar region who first bred the Marwari in the 12th century, favoring the breed for its hardiness and using it as a cavalry horse in battle.
