Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty to early Republic, ca. mid 19th to mid 20th century CE. A delightful pair of carved-wood horses that demonstrate the influence of the Tang dynasty, both with one hoof raised on rectangular plinths. Presenting as mirror images of one another, the two charming animals are painted with creamy beige coats, purplish black manes and tails, and red and green saddles and reins. Their lengthy snouts are angled downwards and carved naturalistically, displaying petite nostrils, almond-shaped eyes, tapered ears, and mouths held open, as though mid-neigh. Both noble steed's boast red saddles and reigns, each fit with five bell-like adornments at the front and six petaloid decorations at the back. Size (both the same): 12.5" L x 10.75" H (31.8 cm x 27.3 cm)
