Description:

East Asia, China, Zhejiang Province, Qing Dynasty, ca. early 19th century CE. A pair of intricately carved, robust doors crafted from solid elm. These substantial doors retain their original wooden pegs, which were designed to secure them within a door frame. Modern metal eyelets have been added along the edges, allowing them to be displayed on a wall. The upper panels are decorated with carvings of flowers interwoven with a linear "wan" motif (swastika), symbolizing good fortune and infinity in Chinese culture. The middle horizontal panels feature depictions of citron, or "Buddha's hand fruit," named for its resemblance to the traditional hand gesture of the Buddha. The lower panels showcase raised relief carvings of rabbits within circular frames. As the fourth position in the Chinese Zodiac, the rabbit represents creativity, compassion, and sensitivity. These decorative motifs were believed to protect against evil or misfortune entering the room or building. Size: 20" L x 2.5" W x 95.5" H (50.8 cm x 6.4 cm x 242.6 cm)
