Description:

Africa, Ashanti, ca. 19th to 20th century CE. A lovely pair of bronze fish sculptures - both cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process. The larger one has a solid body with intricately detailed scales and eyes, traces of red and black pigment, an openwork tail, suspension loops at the top and the mouth, and stands upon curved feet with perforated ends for further suspension. The smaller one is hollow with a decorative openwork central section, applied eyes and fins, a pronounced tail, and stands on two sets of suspension loops at the bottom. A sweet pair of bronzework fish, a popular symbol of life, with exquisite details. Size: larger measures 6" L x 3.5" H (15.2 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Eugene F. Behlen collection

  • Condition: Normal surface wear commensurate with age. Traces of red and black pigment remain on the surface of the larger fish. Wonderful rich patina that has developed over time. A couple of losses to openwork detailing on the smaller fish and casting flaw below its mouth. Otherwise very good.
