Description:

South America, Argentina or Uruguay, Pampas region ca. 19th century CE. A pair of leather pony boots or "botas de potro," the traditional footwear of the gaucho cowboys. The leather was taken from the hind leg hide of a foal or cow, this area of skin was preferred due to the durability and protection against thorns and rough vegetation the rider might encounter. This pair is well worn but retains the shape of the foot and lower calf nearly perfectly and sports several antique repairs with sinew and cotton threads. This style of boots fell out of popularity in the mid to late 19th century. Size: 14" L x 10" W (35.6 cm x 25.4 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960s
