Lot 75
East Asia, China, early Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Emperor, ca. 1654 to 1722 CE. An attractive pair of stoneware plates, each enveloped in lustrous white glaze with a sunburst of blue and black pigments radiating from the center of the shallow basin. Both sit upon a ring-form foot - the only part of them that is left uncovered in glaze - while their flaring walls form wide rims. Several bubbles in the clay have caused petite swollen areas across the interior walls of each dish, granting them a charmingly unique presentation. A cloth-lined wooden box accompanies the 2 dishes, featuring several Chinses inscriptions on the exterior, one of which roughly translates to "Kangxi official eggplant blue small plate, matched pair." Size of plates (both the same): 4" Diameter (10.2 cm); of box: 6.75" L x 3.5" W x 12.25" H (17.1 cm x 8.9 cm x 31.1 cm)
These vessels are a wonderful example of trans-cultural ceramic decoration with the radial design reminiscent of Kashan ware of the 13th century and the form and rustic craftsmanship evocative of Japanese pottery, such as Taihaku and Seto ware.
