Description:

Late Roman Empire, Spain, ca. 5th Century CE. A pair of very large Gepidic silver fibular of ornate design. The elaborate head-plates, or finials, are essentially squares with their upper corners cut off. At the sides are knobbed vertical appliques with scrolling that are attached by bronze pins. At the upper edge is a knobbed figure 8-shaped applique also attached by bronze pins. The knobs originally had glass or stone inlays, one of which is also attached by bronze pins. The arched bow is attached to the head-plate with a notched lunate applique, and to the elongated body with a notched triangular applique.
