Description:

**Originally Listed At $1500**

Northern Europe, Viking, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. An unusual pair of solid silver ornaments of an attractive sinuous design that resembles a serpentine form. The craftsman who created this matching pair was clearly interested in playing with positive and negative space, but also paying careful attention to the surface. Notice the repeated circular motif impressed upon both sides of the undulating composition, perhaps representing snake skin. Beyond this fabulous artistry and technique, the pair is quite subtantive, weighing 161.5 grams. Custom, museum-quality stand. One of the rarest works to have survived the age of the Vikings we have ever handled. Size: each ornament measures ~ 3.625" at widest end x 3.625" H (9.2 cm x 9.2 cm); 7.5" W x 4.375" H (19 cm x 11.1 cm) on stand.
