Native American, Minnesota or the Dakotas, 20th century. This is a pair of undecorated Catlinite daggers that were probably produced for the tourist industry. Catlinite is a lithified mud found in northern Minnesota and southern Ontario; it is fine grained and easily worked, so was used by Native Americans in the Plains Nations to make sacred pipes and other ritual items. The stone is named for the famous painter of Native Americans, George Catlin, who visited the the Minnesota quarry where it comes from in 1835. Size: Each measures 10" long, 1" wide at the hilt, and 1/2" deep at the hilt.
