Tibet, both ca. 19th century CE. Matched set of two large and polished antique silver butter lamps of classic pedestal form, flaring rim; with lotus-petaled tiers and repoussé floral shaft supporting the large deep cup. Offering light to enlightened beings is an important part of Buddhist prayer and ritual for which this lamp would have been used, set before images on an altar. Offering butter to fuel such lmaps is also a favourite practice of pilgrims in Tibet. Both measure 6-1/2"H x 5"W at top rim.
