Description:

Europe, Germany, Berlin, Kongliche Porzellan Manufacktur, ca. 1837 to 1844 CE. A charming pair of KPM porcelain statues - KPM being an acronym for Kongliche Porzellan Manufacktur (Royal Porcelain Manufactory) - both stamped with a red orb with a cross and KPM beneath as well as a black cross. Both are also numbered - 140/371 and 140/566 - the figure wearing the striped headwrap, a green trimmed white cloak tied with a yellow and white striped belt, blue britches, and brown boots, with a drum between his feet, a bow swung over his left arm, and holding a crescent moon topped staff numbered 140/371; the gent wearing a green cloak, red and white striated belt, mauve britches, black/brown boots, with a powderhorn hanging from his waist, and his elaborate headdress removed and placed before his right foot numbered 140/566. Size: each measures ~ 11.125" H (28.3 cm)

KPM was founded in 1763 when Frederick II of Prussia, also known as Frederick the Great, bought the factory which was previously owned by a Berlin businessman, renamed it, and took over the helm. In addition to being KPM's owner, Frederick the Great also often referred to himself as KPM's best customer. In fact, he placed many KPM orders to decorate the interiors of his palace. Numerous KPM dinnerware services, for instance, were designed with the decor of his palace in mind. Hence, they display a Rococo style.
