Description:

Asian. Central Asia, India, ca. 17th to 18th century CE. A hand-carved pair of wooden figures, one a man and one a woman. These figures may depict the gods Shiva and Parvati, husband and wife, although they are not a matched pair. The man is carved from a lighter wood, with his features incised and his hands clasped before him. The woman is slightly larger and carved from dark wood. Her facial features are three-dimensional, with slightly bulging eyes and a thin nose with flared nostrils. She has her arms held out to her sides and a tiny waist. Both stand on ovoid pedestals, carved from a single piece of wood with the figures. Shiva, one of Hinduism's three principal deities, is often depicted with a third eye on his forehead, as this figure is here. Parvati is the Hindu goddess of love and fertility, often shown as a voluptuous woman. Size of largest (woman): 3.4" W x 10.3" H (8.6 cm x 26327.1 cm)
