Lot 166A
Pacific Northwest, North American (USA and Canada), possibly Haida, ca. late 19th century CE. A polychrome wood carving of convex form showing an animal, almost certainly an owl, with a three-dimensional narrow beak extending from heavy brows; the rest of the body is carved in low relief, with prominent wide eyes above smaller wings and the three front toes of both feet. A pale blue pigment with black details gives the figure added beauty. Some slight discoloration to the wood, especially under the eyes, may indicate that the piece once had abalone shell inset, as similar known pieces do. As a frontlet, it would have been attached to a headdress made from things like feathers, skin, and fur (and you can see the small drilled holes along the edges where it was bound). These were worn by male or female chiefs to greet visitors to a village and show them peace. These are rare artifacts, with one selling at Sotheby's in 2010's American Indian Art auction for over $30,000. Size: 4.75" W x 5" H (12.1 cm x 12.7 cm)
Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
