Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Pachacamac culture, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. A beautiful textile coca bag fragment comprised of tightly-woven natural fibers in hues of gold, fuchsia, jet, cream, and ruby. The repeating decorative register displays a set of twenty-seven abstract squid-like creatures, each with hexagonal eyes, a quintet of drooping tendrils, and layered triangular heads. The creatures alternate between ruby, gold, and jet hues, and a lateral border depicts abstract geometric motifs. A wonderful example! Mounted on fabric backing. Size (textile): 9.375" L x 7.25" W (23.8 cm x 18.4 cm); size (backing): 22.75" L x 21.25" W (57.8 cm x 54 cm).
