Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A fine ceremonial kris (also keris) of an ornate style. The hand-carved wooden handle displays a pair of abstract anthropomorphic maskettes along the interior curve, and the copper spacer cap has silver gilt (6%) and is inset with 10 faceted zirconium stones. The blade is made from a type of steel known as watered steel, and has a sinuous design with a gently oscillating profile and sharpened edges, as well as a grain pattern with lighter nickel ribbons radiating away from the shallow midrib. The wooden sheath is surmounted with a large wooden guard protector, and an openwork brass jacket with silver gilding adorned with dense foliate motifs and animals; tiger, elephant, horse, ox, and peacock.   • Condition: Three stable cracks on wooden handle. Wooden sheath repaired below guard with light adhesive residue along break lines. Sheath jacket is removable. Blade is intact, with nice patina on metal areas.
