Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. 19th century CE. An ornate wood sculpture of Kannon Bosatsu or bodhisattva seated in lotus position with an elaborate, openwork mandorla and an annular copper plate serving as a halo. Draped in flowing robes, the bodhisattva's hands are in his lap, exhibiting the dhyana mudra of meditation. His tranquil visage presents downcast eyes as though engrossed in the act of inward contemplation and deep peace. All is supported by a lotus throne and tiered plinth, while an inscription of Japanese characters can be seen on the verso of the copper halo. Size: 7.4" W x 13.6" H (18.8 cm x 34.5 cm)

  • Condition: Mandorla has been professionally repaired with some repainting and restoration over break lines and small area of loss on proper right side. Copper halo is slightly loose. Nicks and abrasions throughout. Nice remaining detail and liberal remaining pigment. Japanese inscription on verso of copper halo.
