Description:

Near East, Arabian Peninsula, Oman, early 20th century CE. This exquisite Omani storage and dowry chest is crafted from teak wood with intricate brass fixtures and handles. The main compartment lid features a brass loop clasp for a lock, and the drawers can also be locked when the lid is closed - simple wooden rods slide vertically in and out of slots along the main compartment's rim to secure the drawers. The brass appliques, mainly simple studs and tacks, include a pair of peacocks and foliate motifs flanking the clasp. Despite its age, the chest remains in very good condition, showcasing its quality craftsmanship. Situated at the tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman was a hub for trade routes between East Africa and India. These chests were often made in India and imported to Oman, used to store dowries and bridal outfits. Size: 20.5" L x 14" W x 10.5" H (52.1 cm x 35.6 cm x 26.7 cm).
