Hugo d'Alesi (French / Romanian, 1849-1906 - also known as Friedrich Hugo Alesi or Friedrich Hugo Alessi). "Lac D"Annecy" lithograph in colors, linen backed, ca. 1900. An original French travel poster on linen by Friedrich Hugo d'Alesi who was best known for his exceptional travel posters commissioned by railroad lines. This composition features Lake Annecy in the Haute Savoie with a view of La Tournette which rises 2500 meters from the lake. In the foreground, D'Alesi featured the boat La France which would later sink; this location has become a favorite diving spot. A stunning original French travel poster by Hugo d'Alesi mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (sight view): 40.75" L x 28.25" W (103.5 cm x 71.8 cm)

Hugo d'Alesi was among the earliest artists to design posters for French railways. His posters were printed via a process called simile-aquarelle (meaning "faux watercolor"). The final images were comprised of as many as 20 different colors, resulting in rich imagery that was more detailed and painterly than later travel posters. Unfortunately, the process was very expensive process and eventually drove D'Alesi into bankruptcy. D'Alesi's posters had many admirers throughout the world including Paul Cezanne, who stated, "I should like to do decorative landscapes like Hugo d'Alesi, yes, with my small sensibility" (Source: Swann Galleries - Cezanne p. 232).

Please note: This is an original linen-backed poster; it is not a reproduction.
